Oracle announces open-source Verrazzano enterprise container platform

Global software company Oracle today announced Oracle Verrazzano, an open-source curated stack providing a complete one-stop-shop secure container platform.

Oracle Verrazzano is available as a subscription service, with source code on GitHub, bringing together an entire DevOps platform for application modernisation, unifying automated application management and cross-cloud consistency for multi-cloud apps.

It's a rare enterprise that hasn't invested in its own custom applications, whether for intellectual property reasons, unique market gain, efficiency, even to glue multiple disparate SaaS or other applications, or some other reason. Many of these applications are critical and may be developed in numerous ways and reside on many different hosting models. With industries continuing their move to the cloud, there’s a real need for solutions that enable the flexible adoption of cloud-native technologies, modernising existing applications and allowing them to be run wherever the enterprise chooses.

If you're in this boat then Oracle has a solution for you in the form of Verrazzano. The plan is to leverage familiar open source technologies and help customers retain their investments in their existing applications while easing the adoption of modern application development architectures. Verrazzano removes pains in cloud migration by allowing applications to still be run wherever the business wants. This may be on-premises, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, some other public cloud, some form of private cloud, even hybrid multi-cloud. Customers might have reasons for running on any of these for corporate policy or governance reasons or anything else. Whatever the case, Oracle wants to provide a framework of top curated tools and applications that make this seamless and simple for businesses of any size.

Verrazzano, or more formally, Oracle Verrazzano Enterprise Container Platform, enables organisations to deploy, manage, and secure container-based applications in Kubernetes, unifying lifecycle management and standardising Kubernetes cluster management no matter where it runs.

Customers can use Verrazzano now to run any container application, wherever, whenever, and will be expanded over time. The stack has been carefully chosen and contains Oracle-authored open-source custom resources and controllers to bring together istio, Rancher, Keycloak, Helidon, Micronaut, Sprint Boot, Coherence, and more.

It brings these together with automation, and all its configuration stored in YAML files, for easy editing and storing in version control systems. It is a one-stop-shop and includes a management platform piece within the Oracle CoreLogic suite. Future releases will bring more GitOps into the product.

For developers, the benefits are clear. You can improve productivity and accelerate innovation by adopting containers and container management technologies and adopting the design principles of DevOps and cloud-native applications. You can modernise your existing applications without a need for re-engineering, and you can realise cloud-native benefits without lock-in.

Verrazzano contains intelligent workload management, automated and built-in observability, application lifecycle management, polyglot workloads, cross-cloud consistency, and multi-level platform security.

Getting started is as simple as installing the Verrazzano platform operator in your Kubernetes cluster and applying an installation profile such as dev or prod. A quick start guide is available here. There’s no barrier to begin using Verrazzano, and this can well be your way to bringing critical, essential enterprise apps into a modern cloud world.
