Terms like ‘open systems’ have been bandied about for decades. While modern computer systems are relatively open compared to their predecessors, there are still plenty of opportunities to become locked into proprietary interfaces. In this article, we explore the challenge of proprietary lock-in in the age of cloud-based HPC and recommend strategies to help you stay portable and flexible. In the early 1990s lock-in at the level of hardware and operating systems was a major concern. Frustrated with costly proprietary systems, customers began looking towards UNIX as a preferred platform. While not widely used for commercial applications at the time, it was perceived as open. There were only a few dialects, and implementations were mostly standard among vendors. The IEEE’s Portable Operating System Interface standards (POSIX 1003.x) began appearing in RFPs, and although there continued to be multiple processor architectures, the push-pull of innovation and customer demand helped impose more uniformity across operating systems and file systems.

Cloud Computing The disruptive shift to cloud for the long-term investor

Article | March 5, 2020

The public cloud services market is expected to total more than $214 billion when the figures for 2019 are finalised. The Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) segment of cloud is expected to have grown nearly 30% during 2019. If you haven’t heard of “IaaS”, that’s ok, just think of “Amazon Web Services” or “Microsoft Azure” as some of the biggest players in IaaS. In 2019, the U.S. Department of Defence even entered into a $10 billion contract with Microsoft Azure to move to the cloud, offering yet another proof point on the perceived convenience and security of using cloud-based infrastructure. In August of 2011, Marc Andreessen, a prominent Silicon Valley venture capitalist, wrote the phrase “software is eating the world” within a Wall Street Journal article[3]. Even then, now more than eight years ago, the case was clear that companies in Silicon Valley were relying less and less on delivering a physical “product” and more and more on delivering some type of software over the internet.

New Cloud TPU VMs make training your ML models on TPUs easier than ever

Article | June 1, 2021

Today, we’re excited to announce new Cloud TPU VMs, which make it easier than ever before to use our industry-leading TPU hardware by providing direct access to TPU host machines, offering a new and improved user experience to develop and deploy TensorFlow, PyTorch, and JAX on Cloud TPUs. Instead of accessing Cloud TPUs remotely over the network, Cloud TPU VMs let you set up your own interactive development environment on each TPU host machine. Now you can write and debug an ML model line-by-line using a single TPU VM, then scale it up on a Cloud TPU Pod slice to take advantage of the super-fast TPU interconnect. You have root access to every TPU VM you create, so you can install and run any code you wish in a tight loop with your TPU accelerators. You can use local storage, execute custom code in your input pipelines, and more easily integrate Cloud TPUs into your research and production workflows.
