‘Every manufacturer is looking for avenues to gain productivity in their operations,’ says Vinay Nathan

No leader exists in a silo. It is the team that makes things happen.
Vinay Nathan, a seasoned professional with a rich and diverse career, has demonstrated his prowess in leadership across engineering, product management, marketing, and sales. His passion for technology extends to a keen interest in Sensor Networks, IIoT and Mobile. Read on to know his thoughts on how effective content syndication creates an impact in IT industry.

No leader exists in a silo. It is the team that makes things happen.

Media 7: To start with, could you tell us a bit about your journey? Reflecting on your illustrious career, could you take us back to a pivotal moment or decision that played a defining role in your journey to becoming the CEO of Altizon?
Vinay Nathan:
After completing my Masters in CS, I began my career as a software engineer at a startup. The first part of my career was working the engineering track and building software for embedded systems and mobile devices. I was keen to explore the business side and so made a switch from engineering to marketing and then sales. All these experiences set me up for taking the entrepreneurial plunge and cofound Altizon. I think the decision to switch from heading an engineering team to moving to sales was a pivotal moment in my career. I found my true calling on the front end of business and that laid the foundation for me to also become an entrepreneur.

M7: Throughout your career, you've likely encountered various industries and roles. How has your diverse professional background contributed to your effectiveness as a CEO of a company offering SAAS-related applications and solutions?
VN:
Having had the opportunity to work in every function of a tech business from engineering to sales, from the entry level positions to leadership roles has been huge factor in helping me build trust amongst the teams I lead. It is a CEO’s job to make the various functions gel together and be more than the sum of the parts. Through my career I have had the opportunity to work in both a couple of product companies and one services company. Enterprise SaaS offerings need both the ability to build products of value, and, the customer success mindset of a services organization.

M7: What role do you believe innovation plays in the continued growth of the tech sector, and how do you foster innovation within Altizon?
VN:
Innovation has been at the core of Altizon since inception. We were amongst the first public cloud offerings in the world for Industrial IoT platform a decade ago. Gartner and several analysts of note have regularly featured us in their reports as innovators. Over time we have built on this footprint by launching a Digital Factory Application suite that includes very advanced analytics and machine learning capabilities. We are now looking to differentiate with a deep industry specific knowhow in helping industrial world embrace AI.

M7: Effective content syndication can amplify the reach and impact of any content. Would you like to discuss how does Altizon strategize and execute content creation in the information security sector to ensure valuable insights and expertise reach the right audiences across various platforms and channels?
VN:
We are open to collaborating with multiple stakeholders in sharing our insights in all aspects of building industrial IoT products and solutions. Not only do we publish our own reports, but we have also worked with analysts and our in house experts have also authored chapters in books of note delving into Industry 4.0.

M7: Altizon's journey from inception to its current position is impressive. What advice would you offer to startups and entrepreneurs looking to make a meaningful impact in the Industrial AI space?
VN:
Industrial AI is a very fragmented market and there is a plethora of opportunities to create technology businesses of value. The ability to iterate and quickly create a product-market fit is spoken of in most startup support ecosystems. The most important factor though is your ability to create a go-to-market approach that is scalable.

Industrial AI is a very fragmented market and there is a plethora of opportunities to create technology businesses of value.

M7: How do you foresee the role of Industrial AI in shaping the future of manufacturing and other sectors?
VN:
Industrial AI will bring the next wave of productivity increases across the manufacturing world. It will play a key role in helping manufacturers achieve their sustainability goals and drive greater resilience in their supply chains.

M7: In a world where data security and privacy are paramount concerns, what do you think are the best practices for organizations handling sensitive industrial data?
VN:
It is imperative that organizations have security and privacy at the forefront of designing and deploying their products and solutions. The sensitivity to the threats needs to be built from the shop floor to the corporate office as a key tenet in everything they do. The IT organization in particular is the custodian for the industrial data and needs to have SOPs and audits for each application, person and infrastructure element that deals with industrial data.

M7: Making some noise in the infosec space through advertising can be tough. Would you like to share your thoughts on how to best use content creation or advertising to promote SAAS platforms?
VN:
We do not use any advertising for our products. Our preferred method is to write whitepapers and reports to share our insights. This helps us develop our thought leadership position in the sector.

M7: Smart Manufacturing is indeed a revolutionary force in optimizing production processes. Could you paint a vivid picture of how Altizon's Smart Manufacturing services have not only embraced businesses but also acted as a driving force, supercharging productivity and slashing costs?
VN:
Every manufacturer is looking for avenues to gain productivity in their operations. Altizon has had a successful track record in delivering fast ROI to manufacturers using our Productivity Application to improve their Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE). We begin by collecting data directly from machines on the shop floor and analyzing the data that gets generated in real time. A system of alerts and insights that gets generated from this analysis helps them react faster to events on the shopfloor to significantly reduce the downtime of their machines. This leads to greater throughput and reduced costs. In some cases, manufacturers have found a multimillion $ cost reduction within the first year of Altizon’s product Digital Factory-X(DFX) deployment.

The most important task for a leader is to assemble the best team possible and then get out of the way.

M7: Looking ahead in the growing Information Security industry, how does Altizon plan to set and surpass high standards while aligning its goals with the latest industry trends?
VN:
At Altizon we are always closely aligned to our customers on their information security needs. We are continuously evaluating their threat and vulnerability perceptions and sharing our best practices with them. Our security team is also constantly absorbing the developments in the industry to ensure we stay ahead of the curve and are in the best position to serve our customers.

M7: Altizon's success in the Industrial AI space is a testament to your leadership. What advice would you give to aspiring leaders who aim to build and lead innovative teams in the tech industry?
VN:
No leader exists in a silo. It is the team that makes things happen. The most important task for a leader is to assemble the best team possible and then get out of the way. Innovative teams will own their problem spaces and create great solutions. As a leader you need to support their endeavors and shield them during the setbacks that are inevitable to happen when you push the envelope.

M7: Altizon serves diverse sectors, including Automotive, F&B, CPG, and Energy. How does the company tailor its thought leadership initiatives to address the unique challenges and opportunities within each of these verticals?
VN:
Great question. Thought leadership communications and content at Altizon is very focused on customer impact. So, no matter what vertical within manufacturing we address, the impact points are consistent around productivity enhancement, cost reductions and sustainability initiative goals we help customer achieve. The deeper dive will present use cases within how this is achieved in a specific type of customer, but the top level talking points are the same.

The Manufacturing Sector Experiences More Attacks in the Cloud than Any Other Industry

PR Newswire: | January 19, 2024

Netwrix, a cybersecurity vendor that makes data security easy, today revealed additional findings for the manufacturing sector from its survey of 1,610 IT and security professionals across more than 100 countries. According to the survey, 64% of companies in the manufacturing sector suffered a cyberattack during the preceding 12 months, which is similar to the finding among organizations overall (68%). However, it turned out that the manufacturing sector experiences more cloud infrastructure attacks than any other industry surveyed. Among manufacturing companies that detected an attack, 85% spotted phishing in the cloud compared to only 58% across all verticals; 43% faced user account compromise in the cloud as opposed to 27% among all industries; and 25% dealt with data theft by hackers in the cloud compared to 15% for organizations overall. "The manufacturing sector relies heavily on the cloud to work with their supply chain in real time. This makes their cloud infrastructure a lucrative target for attackers — infiltrating it enables them to move laterally and potentially compromise other linked organizations, as happened to one the world's top meat processing companies. Credential compromise or malware deployed via a phishing email is just the beginning of the attack," says Dirk Schrader, VP of Security Research at Netwrix. "The attack surface in the cloud is always expanding, so it's critical for manufacturing companies to adopt a defense-in-depth approach," adds Ilia Sotnikov, Security Strategist at Netwrix. "First, they must rigorously enforce the principle of least privilege to limit access to sensitive data, which ideally includes just-in-time access to eliminate unnecessary entry points for adversaries. They also need to gain deep visibility into when and how critical data in the cloud is being used so that IT teams can promptly spot potential threats. Finally, they need to be prepared to minimize the damage from incidents by having a comprehensive response strategy that is regularly exercised and updated." Since 2006, Netwrix solutions have been simplifying the lives of security professionals by enabling them to identify and protect sensitive data to reduce the risk of a breach, and to detect, respond to and recover from attacks, limiting their impact. More than 13,500 organizations worldwide rely on Netwrix solutions to strengthen their security and compliance posture across all three primary attack vectors: data, identity and infrastructure.
