AvePoint’s Dr. Tianyi Jiang says “Making people feel like their authentic selves is vital to business success.”

Media 7 | February 23, 2022

We had the opportunity to explore AvePoint’s SaaS solutions that helps enterprises protect their cloud data through this interview with Dr. Tianyi Jiang, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder at AvePoint. Read on to know more about his thoughts on cloud data migration and his advice to young entrepreneurs.

Unique people, ideas and experiences all come together to build something powerful.

MEDIA 7: What was the turning point of your life that led you on the path to becoming AvePoint's CEO & Co-founder?
DR. TIANYI JIANG:
Growing up in a first-generation immigrant household, I was strongly encouraged by my parents- who came to America as exchange research scientists working for the federal government- to follow a reliable trajectory: Go to the best schools and work for the best companies. In other words, keep your head down, study hard, and play it safe. And I did that for years. But on September 11, 2001, I realized how little of one’s life is under our own control. I was working at Lehman Brothers, where my office was in the World Trade Center, North Tower. Luckily, all of my friends and colleagues survived, but as I watched the towers collapse and the smoke fill the air from across the way in Jersey City, I knew that life was too precious to take for granted.

A life-altering event that shook the economy and our emotional cores was what it took for me to leave a stable, well-paid job on Wall Street and to enroll in a part-time MBA program (and later, PhD studies) at New York University. I had also reconnected with a former friend and colleague from Bell Labs, Kai Gong, who had started AvePoint and decided to join him. It was scary but I needed to take the risk, and never looked back. I began serving as COO in 2005, Co-CEO in 2014, and CEO in 2020.  Along the way, I  have worn many hats as our business grew globally and evolved into a world-class B2B SaaS company.  Looking back, I am grateful I took the leap of faith.

M7: According to you, what cultural factors make the business successful?
TJ:
Especially today, corporate culture is critical, and at AvePoint, our culture has always been the center of attention. Our company name represents the point at which avenues merge – where unique people, ideas and experiences all come together to build something powerful. At the same time, our logo represents both a rising sun above a mountain and a person with a bowing head. That duality captures our mission: to dream big and make a positive difference, but always with humility.

As a CEO and leader of this business for over twenty years, I have witnessed how critical it is to identify core values and live them. As AvePoint has grown, we’ve invested in programs that further our culture like building employee resources groups, providing incentives for continuous education and professional development, and supporting philanthropic efforts. In addition, inclusion, diversity, equality and allyship have always been in our DNA and I believe that making people feel like their authentic selves is vital to business success.

There may never be a right time to make big decisions.

M7: What SaaS solutions do you provide that support and manage small and mid-sized business customers?
TJ:
The beauty of AvePoint is that all our enterprise-grade SaaS solutions can be used for small and mid-sized businesses too. Many SMBs today rely on our digital collaboration security product suite to help protect their cloud data. To give you an example, many small businesses use our FLY migration tool to move data from on-prem to the cloud or from cloud to cloud. Similarly, thousands of small businesses today leverage AvePoint Cloud Backup to protect critical business data, whether that’s in Microsoft 365, Google Workspace or Salesforce. SaaS data protection and self-service enabled recovery is especially important in recovering from Ransomware attacks. In March, our SaaS solution will also include automatic Ransomware detection features to further enhance business security and responsiveness.

M7: AvePoint mitigates, manages, and protects data to secure collaboration across different platforms. How do you ensure that the highest safety measures are maintained?
TJ:
AvePoint takes its security responsibility very seriously. We have a dedicated security, privacy and risk team committed to both ensuring our products are rigorously tested for compliance, and to training all employees on best practices to mitigate potential threats.
We maintain numerous certifications like FedRAMP in the United States, ISO, and SOC 2 Type II which affirm and validate our commitment to security. It is critical for us to uphold these certifications given the hundreds of petabytes of data that we protect for customers across both the public and private sectors.

Dream big and make a positive difference, but always with humility.

M7: What piece of advice would you like to give to entrepreneurs of this and forthcoming generations?
TJ:
If you’re starting a business or thinking about doing it, there may never be a “right time” to make big decisions. It likely will not be glamorous to start, but it will be worth it if you’re going after your dreams and doing what brings you purpose. When my co-founded Kai and I started AvePoint, we worked out of a public library in New Jersey. The company did not make a single dollar for three years, and it wasn’t for another decade that I could pay myself more than my Wall Street salary. But the journey was worthwhile because we believed in the vision and surrounded ourselves with hardworking and passionate people along the way. That’s critical to building a sustainable and resilient business.

New Wiz Runtime Sensor Pioneers a Unified Approach to Cloud Security

Globenewswire | June 06, 2023

Wiz, the leading cloud security platform, today announced the public preview for the Wiz Runtime Sensor, which helps organizations further protect cloud workloads by detecting and responding to potential threats in real-time. The Runtime Sensor deepens the value of Wiz’s top-ranked Cloud Native Application Protection Platform (CNAPP) by eliminating blind spots and siloes to provide better visibility, risk assessment and protection. To best secure cloud environments, security teams need to both proactively remove exploitable attack paths into their cloud and have a last line of defense in the event of an incident. By extending its platform with the Wiz Runtime Sensor, Wiz gives organizations a way to do this without having to rely on multiple, fragmented tools. Furthermore, organizations that rely exclusively on an agent-based workload protection approach leave as many as 80% of workloads unprotected with undiscovered vulnerabilities and attack paths, according to Wiz research1. The new Runtime Sensor extends Wiz’s existing agentless visibility with agent-based real-time detection, for the best of both worlds. "We promised the board world-class Cloud Security Posture Management and real time threat detections,” said Joel Bork, CISO at DoubleVerify. “Between what Wiz already brought to the table with agentless visibility, risk assessment and the rollout of the new Sensor, Wiz exceeds that promise and delivers additional forensics features as well. After months of robust review, it is by far the best offering on the market and enables us to drive our hybrid and multi-cloud security strategy from a single platform." “Wiz enables us to combine the reactive and proactive aspects of cloud security in a single source of truth,” said Joel Cardella, Director, Cybersecurity Engineering at Dexcom. “We rely on the visibility that Wiz provides to surface the unknowns and provide actionable signals from noise. With the Wiz Runtime Sensor, we are adding active, real-time telemetry that gives my team intelligent insight to drive better actions. Dexcom has a strategic goal of pushing hard and fast to scale our business. By leveraging Wiz, we can support and accelerate our cloud transformation without doubling the security team. My team is more efficient and able to focus on strategic work. Wiz simplifies our security challenges and will allow us to more than double our cloud environment over the coming years without scaling complexity.” The Wiz Runtime Sensor is a lightweight eBPF-based agent that can be deployed within Kubernetes clusters. It provides real-time visibility into cloud-native environments, full detection and threat mapping, enhanced remediation and prioritization, and helps organizations chase down the threats that matter to minimize disruptions to the business. Key benefits include: Real-time monitoring and detection of threats and malicious behavior: Wiz detects known and unknown threats including remote code execution, malware, cryptomining and other forms of resource theft, lateral movement or worms, rootkits seeking persistence or privilege escalation and container escape. Full end-to-end visibility into attacks for faster, more efficient response: Wiz extends its Cloud Detection & Response capabilities by correlating threats across real-time signals, cloud activit, and audit logs in a unified, contextual view to uncover attacker movement within a cloud environment so cloud defenders can rapidly respond to limit the impact of a potential incident. Extended attack path analysis for better risk prioritization: Enriches Wiz’s agentless vulnerability assessment using runtime workload signals to identify vulnerabilities affecting active packages that are being used by the workload, so security teams can focus remediation efforts on vulnerable active packages. Out-of-the-box detections to ensure readiness for the latest attacks: The Wiz Threat Research team constantly adds coverage for the latest cloud and Kubernetes attacks seen in the wild. The Wiz detection engine is updated with heuristics-based rulesets that provide transparent and consistent detections, including complex detections that require correlation across cloud layers. “Today’s launch is instrumental in our quest to simplify cloud security” said Yinon Costica, Co-Founder and VP Product, Wiz. “The Wiz Runtime Sensor expands Wiz to a ‘defense in depth’ approach, which spans prevention to real-time detection and response. We are committed to continue to innovate our CNAPP so that it supports customers across their cloud security journey, particularly as they look to consolidate and optimize value from technology investments." Read our blog to learn more about the Wiz Runtime Sensor. About Wiz Wiz secures everything organizations build and run in the cloud. Founded in 2020, Wiz is the fastest-growing software company in the world, scaling from $1M to $100M ARR in 18 months. Prnewswire | May 31, 2023

Zesty, a pioneer in dynamic cloud infrastructure solutions, today announced that it has partnered with skyPurple Cloud, the public cloud operations specialists for enterprises. With Zesty, skyPurple Cloud's customers have already reduced their average monthly EC2 Linux On-Demand costs by 44% on AWS. While cloud spend continues to increase, growth has reportedly slowed as companies remain cautious during economic uncertainty. In order to reduce cloud costs, many organizations depend on developers to constantly monitor and manage EC2 resources and cloud spend manually rather than overprovision and commit to a long-term discount plan. skyPurple Cloud empowers businesses with support solutions for public cloud implementation. As part of its tailor-made approach, skyPurple Cloud customers employ Zesty's technology to optimally scale and automate cloud operations to drive sustainable growth and cut costs. Within the first month of implementation, skyPurple Cloud customers noticed a significant increase in service quotas for Amazon EC2 instances and saved developers considerable time and money by automatically handling quota requests on customers' behalf. "Companies are no longer able to ignore overspending and settle for suboptimal rates for their cloud resources. EC2 instances quickly become very expensive to run and companies must ensure that more of their workloads are covered by discount programs that will dramatically push down this cost premium. We're thrilled that skyPurple Cloud is helping its customers to stay cost-efficient by implementing Zesty." "skyPurple Cloud plays a key role on the path to achieve cloud optimisation in the UK market," said Lucia Meyassed, Global Partner Manager Team Lead at Zesty.
