“We’ll see advanced security with AI and ML to automate the process of threat detection and prevention” predicts Pax8’s Brad Fugitt.

Media 7 | January 31, 2022

Brad Fugitt, Chief Information Security Officer at Pax8 talks about what makes Pax8 the best place to work and the key trends in the cloud security landscape. Read on to know more about his thoughts on edge computing, IoT, and AI in the context of cloud security.

Understanding shared responsibilities will be critical in the use and distribution of workloads across multiple cloud environments.

MEDIA 7: From working with presidents in The White House to headlining the cybersecurity for one of the best cloud commerce marketplaces. How has all this experience helped you play your current role at Pax8?
BRAD FUGITT:
In my role, I was constantly thinking about the continuity of operations, so I spent a lot of time developing options a, b, c, etc., for response to different scenarios. This approach has helped me a lot in my planning for business impact, business continuity, disaster recovery, and incident response. Another area was controlling access. This aspect helps when addressing access control, least privilege access.

M7: That’s definitely a unique modus operandi you got there. Pax8 is named the Best Place to Work in Colorado for the fourth consecutive year. What do you believe is the driving force behind company’s proven track records and achievements?
BF:
We believe very strongly in servant leadership and collaboration at Pax8. Everyone gets the opportunity to be heard, and we work to support a healthy and ever-evolving culture.

Gartner estimates that 5.6B IoT devices have used edge computing for processing data.

M7: Servant leadership is a sign of a really good work environment, so kudos to Pax8 for implementing that. Now let’s discuss the core of Pax8, the cloud. While cloud adoption provides enterprises with flexibility and productivity, it also exposes organizations to cyber threats and data breaches. How do you ensure Pax8 lives up to the highest security standards?
BF:
Pax8's use of the cloud has improved our overall security compared to traditional premise-based services. We leverage Software as a Service (SaaS) wherever possible, shifting key elements of risk to service providers and reducing our overall attack surface. Doing this helps us focus on access controls and secure information without the burden of securing the infrastructure.  We use industry best practices and validate with our recently completed ISO 27001 audit and our current work towards our SOC2 certification. We are also members of the Cloud Security Alliance.

M7: Speaking of higher security standards, what are the toughest challenges to international privacy compliance, in your opinion?
BF:
As a growing global organization, it is imperative we understand and comply with the privacy laws of the countries in which we operate. Understanding the nuances that may or may not overlap one standard’s controls with another and incorporating that into daily operations will always be a challenge. We need to know where the data lies and where does it flow.

We will see more and faster storage with data security frameworks at a lower price.

M7: What do you believe will be the key trends likely to emerge in cloud security landscape over the next 5 years?
BF:
Understanding shared responsibilities will be critical in the use and distribution of workloads across multiple cloud environments. We’ll see advanced security with AI and machine learning to automate the process of threat detection and prevention. Edge computing helps manage the massive amount of data generated from IoT devices. Gartner estimates that 5.6B IoT devices have used edge computing for processing data. IoT will continue to grow, and current estimates show there are now over 25B connected devices. We will see more and faster storage with data security frameworks at a lower price. And, as already mentioned, we’ll see more and more AI.

M7: That’ll be interesting to see. Now, for our last question. What is your go-to resource – websites, newsletters, any other – that helps you stay updated with the revolutions happening in the cybersecurity space?
BF:
I have a lengthy list of news feeds that put a lot of data in a single pane of glass-following other security-minded folks in social media and subscribing to several regulatory email lists. These include LinkedIn, NIST, CIA, CSA, and Infraguard.

Blue Planet Automation Accelerates CSP Adoption of 5G and Multi-Cloud

Blue Planet | September 28, 2022

Blue Planet, a division of Ciena has added new software enhancements to its intelligent automation product portfolio, helping communication service providers (CSPs) accelerate their digital transformation and quickly monetize innovative digital services built on 5G and multi-cloud infrastructure. These enhancements deliver end-to-end observability and control to automate service lifecycle management, improve operational agility and optimize customer experience. The latest software innovations across the Blue Planet intelligent automation portfolio address multiple CSP digital transformation challenges and opportunities: 5G automation: The emergence of 5G standalone, network slicing and multi-access edge computing (MEC) allows CSPs to monetize their network in new ways by delivering innovative slice-based services and offering true digital experiences. Blue Planet is providing new 5G automation capabilities that include: An open, productized 5G network slicing solution that incorporates end-to-end orchestration and observability for zero-touch lifecycle management – automating design, activation, assurance, and modification – of slices, including sub-slice management, across the radio access network (RAN) to the core. Dynamic inventory for visualizing the optimal placement of physical and cloud-native resources as well as the end-to-end 5G service topology to help CSPs plan and deploy their 5G resources quickly and efficiently. Multi-Cloud extensibility: Open cloud-based approaches are critical to increasing scale and agility, as well as enabling elastic connectivity models with cloud providers. New Blue Planet multi-cloud enhancements include: Broad Kubernetes support that enables the intelligent placement and orchestration of cloud-based network functions (CNFs) and applications in distributed multi-cloud environments. As a truly cloud-native platform, Blue Planet can be deployed in any public or private cloud and can be consumed in a software-as-a-service (SaaS) model. As a key player in the multi-cloud ecosystem, Blue Planet has recently joined Nephio, a new Linux Foundation open-source project seeded by Google and focused on Kubernetes-based intent-driven automation of network functions and the underlying infrastructure that supports them. Low-code usability: Low-code technology helps CSPs improve operational agility by empowering them and their system integration partners to design and build new service types and applications for end customers with minimal IT and vendor support. New Blue Planet low-code enhancements include: A single set of integrated development tools across the Blue Planet portfolio to accelerate the onboarding of new network resources and declarative templating abilities that simplify the modeling and creation of new services. "With the rise of 5G and cloudified services, CSPs’ network and service operations will become even more complicated, making automation a necessity. Blue Planet has been making steady incremental progress to enable CSP automation, with its vendor-agnostic, modular, programmable take on service lifecycle management. This latest product upgrade from Blue Planet, with its focus on simplicity for the customer, provides telcos with an opportunity for growth and to engage with the digital economy,” said Francis Haysom, Principal Analyst, Appledore. "Digitization is accelerating for CSPs as they modernize their operations to deliver innovative new services more quickly and cost-effectively,” said Rick Hamilton, At Blue Planet, we are laser-focused on creating intelligent automation capabilities that help our CSP customers digitize operations and deliver exciting new digital services to improve the customer experience.” Senior Vice President, Blue Planet. You can learn more about these new and enhanced features by visiting Blue Planet this week at Digital Transformation World (DTW) 2022, September 20-22 in Copenhagen, Denmark, where Blue Planet is participating in the ‘Supercharged edge-aware marketplaces’ Catalyst demonstration.
