“We’ll see advanced security with AI and ML to automate the process of threat detection and prevention” predicts Pax8’s Brad Fugitt.

Brad Fugitt, Chief Information Security Officer at Pax8 talks about what makes Pax8 the best place to work and the key trends in the cloud security landscape. Read on to know more about his thoughts on edge computing, IoT, and AI in the context of cloud security.

Understanding shared responsibilities will be critical in the use and distribution of workloads across multiple cloud environments.

MEDIA 7: From working with presidents in The White House to headlining the cybersecurity for one of the best cloud commerce marketplaces. How has all this experience helped you play your current role at Pax8?
BRAD FUGITT:
In my role, I was constantly thinking about the continuity of operations, so I spent a lot of time developing options a, b, c, etc., for response to different scenarios. This approach has helped me a lot in my planning for business impact, business continuity, disaster recovery, and incident response. Another area was controlling access. This aspect helps when addressing access control, least privilege access.

M7: That’s definitely a unique modus operandi you got there. Pax8 is named the Best Place to Work in Colorado for the fourth consecutive year. What do you believe is the driving force behind company’s proven track records and achievements?
BF:
We believe very strongly in servant leadership and collaboration at Pax8. Everyone gets the opportunity to be heard, and we work to support a healthy and ever-evolving culture.

Gartner estimates that 5.6B IoT devices have used edge computing for processing data.

M7: Servant leadership is a sign of a really good work environment, so kudos to Pax8 for implementing that. Now let’s discuss the core of Pax8, the cloud. While cloud adoption provides enterprises with flexibility and productivity, it also exposes organizations to cyber threats and data breaches. How do you ensure Pax8 lives up to the highest security standards?
BF:
Pax8's use of the cloud has improved our overall security compared to traditional premise-based services. We leverage Software as a Service (SaaS) wherever possible, shifting key elements of risk to service providers and reducing our overall attack surface. Doing this helps us focus on access controls and secure information without the burden of securing the infrastructure.  We use industry best practices and validate with our recently completed ISO 27001 audit and our current work towards our SOC2 certification. We are also members of the Cloud Security Alliance.

M7: Speaking of higher security standards, what are the toughest challenges to international privacy compliance, in your opinion?
BF:
As a growing global organization, it is imperative we understand and comply with the privacy laws of the countries in which we operate. Understanding the nuances that may or may not overlap one standard’s controls with another and incorporating that into daily operations will always be a challenge. We need to know where the data lies and where does it flow.

We will see more and faster storage with data security frameworks at a lower price.

M7: What do you believe will be the key trends likely to emerge in cloud security landscape over the next 5 years?
BF:
Understanding shared responsibilities will be critical in the use and distribution of workloads across multiple cloud environments. We’ll see advanced security with AI and machine learning to automate the process of threat detection and prevention. Edge computing helps manage the massive amount of data generated from IoT devices. Gartner estimates that 5.6B IoT devices have used edge computing for processing data. IoT will continue to grow, and current estimates show there are now over 25B connected devices. We will see more and faster storage with data security frameworks at a lower price. And, as already mentioned, we’ll see more and more AI.

M7: That’ll be interesting to see. Now, for our last question. What is your go-to resource – websites, newsletters, any other – that helps you stay updated with the revolutions happening in the cybersecurity space?
BF:
I have a lengthy list of news feeds that put a lot of data in a single pane of glass-following other security-minded folks in social media and subscribing to several regulatory email lists. These include LinkedIn, NIST, CIA, CSA, and Infraguard.

SonicWall Accelerates SASE Offerings; Acquires Proven Cloud Security Provider

PR Newswire | January 03, 2024

SonicWall, a global cybersecurity leader, today announced the acquisition of Banyan Security, a leading provider of security service edge (SSE) solutions for the modern workforce. This acquisition strengthens SonicWall's portfolio by adding zero trust security relied on by leading fortune 100 companies to small businesses who are replacing legacy architectures for SSE solutions, including Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA). "Cybersecurity's focus is shifting to more dynamic solutions that can adapt to the ever-evolving landscape of threats in the cloud age," said SonicWall President and CEO Bob Vankirk. "For years, firewalls have been the cornerstone of cybersecurity defenses. However, with the rise of cloud computing and secure access service edge (SASE), the industry is shifting its focus to more comprehensive and flexible approaches that include SSE and ZTNA as a necessity. Together, SonicWall and Banyan Security will provide cloud-based secure access service edge (SASE) solutions that empower partners to deliver a security architecture for any stage of their customers' evolving cloud journey." Banyan's technology further extends SonicWall's portfolio to the cloud and provides partners and their customers with more flexibility, which is key to the continued development of SonicWall's cybersecurity platform. The acquisition aligns with SonicWall's "best of suite" strategy — which includes network, endpoint, wireless, cloud email, and threat intelligence — under a single, multi-tenant portal. The platform also simplifies workflows and offers unified threat visibility, enabling service providers and end users to focus on what truly matters. "For decades, SonicWall has played a pivotal role in supporting their partners by delivering leading cybersecurity solutions," said Joshua Skeens, CEO of Logically, a valued SonicWall partner.
