Google Cloud Introduces Healthcare Data Engine to Empower Interoperability in Healthcare

Google Cloud has announced Healthcare Data Engine- a comprehensive solution for healthcare and life sciences organizations that aggregates data from multiple sources, including medical records, claims, clinical trials, and research data. Further, the Healthcare Data Engine helps the operational leaders, clinicians, and researchers gain real-time, complete views of patient records. Further, the Healthcare Data Engine and enables advanced analytics and AI in a protected, compliant, and scalable cloud ecosystem.

According to recent Google Cloud-custom-built research conducted by The Harris Poll, approximately 9 in 10 physicians (87%) say data interoperability should be a precedence at their healthcare organizations at present. Moreover, 95% of physicians reach agreement that access to more holistic patient records helps them diagnose more quickly and accurately. 90% of the physicians say they would be able to provide more care for their patients if they could decrease their time for reviewing and updating records of the patients by just 5%.

Developing and expanding the core capabilities of the Google Cloud Healthcare API, Healthcare Data Engine makes the data more useful by creating an interoperable, record of patient data, and providing clinical insights in FHIR format, as per the standard of healthcare industry. This simplifies innovation and compatibility, helping healthcare and life sciences companies make better real-time decisions that ranges from resource utilization, improving clinical trials, fast-tracking research, identifying high-risk patients, reducing physician burn out, or other critical requirements.

Joe Corkery M.D., Director of Product Management, Google Cloud, says, "After the pandemic, we are aware about the importance of access to the right information, at the right time, is crucial to saving lives."  He added, "We built Healthcare Data Engine to for the healthcare and life sciences organizations easily integrate their data silos to innovate and improve outcomes in healthcare industries."

Healthcare Data Engine can sync more than 90% of HL7v2 messages to FHIR, which helps the customers to act fast and avoid the requirement of custom tooling or services to do the translation between data schemas. In addition, Healthcare Data Engine comes with the power of Google BigQuery's analytics and artificial intelligence to the healthcare industry. It is a powerful tool enabling businesses to process and envisage petabytes of their patient data allowing healthcare systems to understand the complete view of patient’s environment and improve overall health of the population.

Healthcare Data Engine Already Benefitting the Customers

Mayo Clinic has beed utilizing Google Cloud to aggregate data from different resources and synchronize it with FHIR format, and analyze it in BiqQuery. Automation can fast-track this process, enabling Mayo Clinic's experts to concentrate on solving critical health problems rather than managing IT resources.

Jim Buntrock, Vice Chair of Information Technology at Mayo Clinic, says, "We were targeting with our ability to innovate on-prem. By shifting to the cloud, we're able to build tools more simply, at scale, in a way that makes the use of technological advancements in security and privacy to remain at the pivotal position in data protection."

Further, today healthcare organizations such as Indiana University Health uses Healthcare Data Engine.

Availability and Partners

Healthcare Data Engine is accessible in private preview. Implementation partners Deloitte, Quantiphi, Maven Wave, and SADA are ready to assist healthcare and life science organizations deploy Healthcare Data Engine at scale. Additionally, ISV partners such as Mathematica and others are deploying Healthcare Data Engine integrated with novel applications.

Matt Gillingham, Vice President and CTO of Mathematica Health Practice, says, “With the increasing transition to value-based care, health plans and providers need actionable information about patients' gaps in care, especial in patients with chronic diseases, which is hard to follow over time." He added "Maintaining a longitudinal patient record across the network of health system lth system in real-time allows addressing the gap and improving patient experiences and outcomes."
