Datometry Inspires Teradata and Oracle Customers to Shift to Cloud Without Changing the Code

Teradata is a notable identity for its advanced SQL engine designed for handling extreme complex functions such as recursive queries, unique syntax, and custom logic for parallelizing workloads. Additionally, it is also known for its scalability and performance. As a result, Teradata has skillfully positioned itself for organizations with the most challenging analytic issues, and it finally embraced the cloud aggressively.

Further, as representative of the modern cloud, the Redshifts, Synapses, Snowflakes, and BigQueries hyperscale the alternatives with pay-as-you-go pricing that provides more cost-efficient options to legacy Teradata platforms. Unfortunately, for several organizations, functionality gaps or source code and/or schema changes have been the roadblocks for migration.

Datometry says that the solution is not data virtualization but database virtualization. Its technique is to insert a runtime that performs as a buffer between your Teradata SQL statements and the target cloud environment. The strategy is to empower Teradata customers to run their Teradata queries on diverse targets without modifying or completely rewriting the existing SQL programs. Its Hyper Q product is including Oracle to the list of database sources.

The center of Datometry's approach is its trademarked hypervisor that emulates the SQL database calls on the go. It breaks down those complex calls, stored procedures, and/or macros into nuclear operations understandable by the target environment at the backend. Assuming that these operations are probably critical, it offers policy-based queueing that syncs with existing policies run on the source. It also gives JDBC and ODBC APIs for BI and ETL tools.

Certainly, Datometry is not the first to state not to change the existing codes. There are SQL translators, but Datometry claims that they might not be optimally effective. According to Datometry, code converters should handle approximately 60-70% of all workloads. The traditional way was adding the non-SQL code in the application to compensate for the variance between the Teradata SQL and SQL of the target database. Similarly, schema migration tools of cloud databases often miss the custom data types and structures.

But the question is whether Datometry can handle all the eccentricities of Teradata SQL? The organization claims that it has 99% coverage of Teradata workloads. Invariably, there is a cost involved- Datometry's virtualization layer will include 1-2% of overhead. Though they claim that with EPA ratings, your mileage will differ depending on the workloads, it is a small price to pay compared to the overhead cost of maintaining SQL code and schema conversion tools.

About four years ago, Datometry performed its initial proof of concept (POC) with SQL Server on HPE Superdome machines on-premises. Further, it has pivoted to support Azure Synapse and Google BigQuery in the cloud. Finally, as disclosed above, it has just announced a preview for Oracle. Most importantly, Datometry has not yet aimed at Amazon Redshift or Snowflake - so it still has a lot to work on.

Oracle Delivers Extreme Database Performance and Scale with Exadata Cloud Infrastructure X9M

Oracle today announced the availability of Oracle Exadata Cloud Infrastructure X9M, the latest generation of the most powerful Oracle Database platform in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI). With Oracle Autonomous Database Service or Oracle Exadata Database Service running on Exadata Cloud Infrastructure X9M, customers can run existing workloads faster, with greater scale, and at a lower cost than previous generations. In addition, when upgrading from X8M to X9M, organizations can reduce costs by consolidating hundreds of OTLP, analytics, and mixed database workloads onto a single cloud service. Exadata Cloud Infrastructure X9M offers up to 8,064 database server vCPUs, 2.5 times more than X8M, and up to 3.1 PB of uncompressed database capacity, a 28 percent increase. Together with 80 percent faster internal networks, and twice the bandwidth to application server clients, customers can run OLTP workloads with extremely low sub-19 microsecond SQL IO latency and up to 87 percent more IOPS. Exadata Cloud Infrastructure X9M on OCI also accelerates analytics workloads in the cloud with 80 percent faster scan rates of up to 2.88 TB/s. More OLTP and Analytics Performance and Scale The high level of performance delivered by Exadata Cloud Infrastructure X9M helps customers process more mission-critical transactions in less time and develop greater insights by analyzing larger amounts of data faster and with more sophisticated analytical algorithms. Additionally, the ability to consolidate more workloads on less infrastructure as compared to X8M reduces costs. Exadata Cloud Infrastructure X9M provides the following advantages over other cloud databases: Sub-19 microsecond IO latency—25 times better than the half-millisecond latency offered by Amazon RDS, and 50 times better than the one millisecond latency offered by Microsoft Azure SQL—directly improves OLTP responsiveness and throughput. With 64 storage servers, X9M delivers up to 2880GB/s of aggregate analytics scan throughput—137 times faster than possible with a single Azure SQL (21GB/s) and 384 times faster than Amazon RDS (7.5GB/s) instance. Continuous Operations for Mission-Critical Databases Exadata's fault-tolerant hardware and integration with Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) provides continuous operations across failures and enables infrastructure to be expanded, upgraded, and updated without interruption. The scaling of other cloud databases often requires downtime when moving from one pre-defined virtual machine shape to another. NTT DOCOMO Selects Oracle Cloud to Boost Development Capabilities for One of the World's Largest Customer Information Management Systems

(DOCOMO), the largest mobile operator in Japan, has adopted Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) to build its new development environment for ALADIN (ALl Around DoCoMo INformation Systems), one of the largest customer information management systems in the world. Using OCI, the system's 300 developers can now build modern applications in a faster and more cost-efficient manner, while DOCOMO benefits from highly available and secure compute resources, as the company expands to broader telecommunications, internet, and smart life services. In addition, DOCOMO has moved its on-premises Oracle Database for database training to Oracle Database Cloud Service on OCI. ALADIN supports DOCOMO's more than 83 million subscriber base, handling all customer-related operations, such as membership and transactional data, credit checks, contract data, and assignment of telephone numbers. DOCOMO's customer information is rapidly expanding alongside the mobile operator's 'd POINT CLUB' reward points program, growing numbers of traditional cellphone subscribers, and new customer touchpoints, such as chatbots and smart devices.
