Device42 Declares About a Tool for Multi-Cloud Migration Analysis and Recommendation

Device42 | July 01, 2021

Due to the global pandemic in 2020, several organizations have considered shifting their workloads to the cloud. However, businesses still have challenges in identifying the means of migrating the workloads. The new product developed by the startup Device42 is all-geared to help the organizations in understanding their infrastructure. In addition, the product helps analyze your ecosystem and recommends the most cost-effective way to migrate to the cloud.

According to Raj Jalan, the CEO and co-founder of Device 42, "The product uses machine learning to discover the best configuration. It supports four cloud vendors: AWS, Microsoft, Google, and Oracle plus VMware running on AWS."

Jalan explains, "The new product is a multi-cloud migration and recommendation engine. Basically, along with our discovery tool, we have added machine learning technology to constantly update the cost to run the resources across multiple clouds, based on the existing resource utilization."

This capability improves the organization's core competency of providing a resource map wherever they exist. It also considers the dependencies across the infrastructure, which is difficult for the organizations to understand. Jalan added, "Our focus is on hybrid infrastructure discovery and dependency mapping. The infrastructure can be on-prem, in colocation facilities or the cloud."

Device42 customers can now see how all of the different parts of the infrastructure, including applications, work collaboratively. Jalan continues, "A tool that does everything together and also provides a thorough analysis on shifting from physical layer to the logical layer, is hard to find. Even the tools cannot help you find the position of your storage in the webserver."

It is significant to note that this is not about managing resources or making any alterations to allocation. Instead, it is about understanding your entire infrastructure irrespective of its platform and analyzing the different parts' fitment. At the same time, the newest tool finds the most cost-effective way to migrate to the cloud from its current location.

About Device42
Device42 has been operational since 2012 and has around 100 employees. In 2019, it raised about $38 million, including a $34 million Series A. It has not required outside investment, as Jalan reports. They are a cash-rich organization with "decent growth."

The Cloud Computing IaaS industry is still developing, which is evident by the variability in pricing structures. There are many providers, and we hope this white paper provides you with a guide to make an informed decision on what to look for. Believe it or not, some providers have many more fees and caveats in the small print on long pricing pages, as in Amazon’s case where their high utilization instances are billed at the standard rate - whether they are used or not. Is that Cloud Computing pricing, or a legacy of complicated hardware and software pricing that “procurement departments” were set up to protect companies against? Pricing terms like this resemble a dedicated server or the lease of an on- premise server. We do not believe these complicated pricing structure is what MSPs and VARs are looking for. As the industry advances, we hope pricing structures will consolidate more and that true Cloud Computing “consumption based billing” becomes the norm. ProfitBricks is completely focused on being transparent and offering the best price and performance ratio of any provider, at half the price. For now, MSPs, VARs and cloud buyers are advised to understand their infrastructure requirements and target configurations. If you are reading this, you have already taken the time to educate yourself and your team on how to look at Cloud Computing pricing, and you’re now empowered to start performing apples to apples comparisons of Cloud Computing IaaS offerings.
