Dropbox buys up CloudOn to strengthen MS Office capabilities

Dropbox has quietly acquired CloudOn, a provider of a mobile app that lets users create and edit Microsoft Office documents, for an undisclosed sum.The CloudOn app lets users work on Microsoft Office files directly within various cloud storage platforms (Box, Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, Hightail); it’s a full-featured editor for iOS and Android and seems to be highly rated among users.“What we’ve achieved alongside our 9 million users – the driving force behind CloudOn – has been pretty incredible: over 90 million documents have been edited, created or shared on CloudOn. We want to thank you for the support and appreciate your participation in CloudOn – making it a top 10 productivity app in 120 countries,” the company said in a statement posted on its website.
