Bare-Metal High Performance Computing in the Cloud

September 20, 2018

The world’s fastest supercomputer, the IBM/NVIDIA Summit, began final testing at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee. Peak performance is over 200 petaflops (2 x 1017 64-bit floating point calculations) and 3.3 exaflops (3.3 x 1018) for tensor operations. Previously untouchable problems will include deep learning for patterns in human proteins, analysis of the entire U.S. cancer population, supernova models running more than 100 times faster than previously, and materials simulations increasing from tens of atoms to hundreds using first-principles calculations at subatomic levels.

Partnering with Dell to Navigate Application Modernization in a Multicloud, Multi-venue Universe

whitePaper | January 19, 2023

Agility is no longer simply a desirable business characteristic. Because of the unprecedented levels of agility that have been enabled by IT, it is now a critical business quality. To maintain competitive levels of agility and keep pace with a quickly evolving macro-IT environment, organizations are currently facing a pressing need to modernize both their applications and their methods for developing and deploying those applications. Organizations that have already done so are reaping the benefits of faster application development and deployment, as well as greater portability across their expanding environments, which can include multiple public clouds, on-premises data centers, and edge locations. IT organizations that don’t modernize their applications will not only fail to enjoy these benefits, but will also be unable to sustain competitive levels of agility.

Artificial Intelligence and Cloud Computing

whitePaper | November 26, 2019

The buzz surrounding artificial intelligence (AI) is hard to ignore. Huge data sets and large amounts of compute are the perfect match for deep learning, astonishing us with algorithms that have beaten grandmasters at games of chess and Go. Today, with access to no more than a web browser, the benefits enabled by breakthroughs in image and speech recognition not to mention machine translation and more are just a few clicks away. There’s the growth of the cloud to consider too. We’re depositing more and more of our data on virtual drives that make it easier to share, back-up and transfer information providing us with new opportunities both in the office and at home. But what do machine learning and cloud computing mean for scientific research? How can these tools help researchers to manage and navigate the vast datasets generated by increasingly sophisticated detectors and experiments? At big science facilities, data streams that used to be megabits per second are now hundreds of times faster, sometimes even more, as detector upgrades come online and new instruments are installed. That’s a lot of data to analyse and verify.
